Engineering @ London

Our Purpose

Improbable is dedicated to building powerful technology designed to help solve previously impossible problems and enable the creation of new realities. In gaming and entertainment, Improbable unlocks truly next-generation gameplay through virtual worlds of unprecedented scale, persistence and richness. In other industries, we hope to help answer critical questions through simulations that could lead to a better functioning world.

Our platform, SpatialOS, lets developers transcend the limits of regular computation, allowing swarms of servers running in the cloud to cooperate in order to simulate worlds far larger and more complex than any single server could.

We are a British technology company proudly building a diverse workforce, driven by a shared desire to improve and achieve extraordinary things. We’re crafting technology for the future and fostering a problem-solving culture that embraces innovation through iteration and experimentation.

Your Mission
You will be our first data engineering hire in the Enterprise division, wearing multiple hats and establishing a data engineering culture within our group. A large part of your work will be to establish data infrastructure that supports our data scientists, engineers and researchers and creates value for our customers. We have already helped build and power simulations of cities, supply chains, utility networks and training environments. We may build these simulations directly, leverage partner relationships or support external customers developing directly on the platform.

As a very varied role you can expect to perform the following (and much more!)

  • Interact directly with a huge range of proprietary and open data sources, leveraging data in all sorts of formats including unstructured, geospatial and temporal
  • Interact with a broad range of customer APIs, building data pipelines to provide the data needed by our engineers and data scientists to create accurate models
  • Leverage a range of data engineering tools to be effective. To date we’ve used a combination of the following Python, Bash, Java, Postgres, PostGIS, CartoDB, d3.js and many more
  • Shape our thinking on data engineering best practices for both our applied project teams but also core data pipelines of our GraphOS platform
  • Work in a cross-functional team of engineers, data scientists, visualization specialists & product colleagues to solve important customer problems

  • You can read about our products and and organisation here

    Competencies

  • Experience with a range of data engineering languages & tools including Python, Scala, Spark, Hadoop etc
  • Experience of data-engineering toolsets, high-volume data architectures and data warehousing platforms
  • Experience designing data pipelines, infrastructures and/or architectures
  • Ability to interact effectively with both technical and non-technical audiences, providing engineering feedback across the business together with one-on-one support for analysts
  • Enthusiastic about continuously improving and rapidly developing new competencies

  • Equal Opportunity
The best ideas are often the least expected and require new ways of thinking; that’s why our teams at Improbable are made up of an incredible range of talented people. Improbable is proud to be an equal opportunity employer.
